2nd Annual Race for Spinal Victory was a Success

It was a beautiful spring morning on Sunday, April 30, 2006 at Jones Beach State Park, where the second annual 5K & 10 mile run/walk was held at Zachs Bay. Over 600 participants from across Long Island and throughout the local tri-state area came out to support the event. With the continued success from our first Race for Spinal Victory we were able to have more than ten wheelchair participants this year. In addition to the participants we had on the day of the race we were also fortunate to have the students at Jericho Middle School supporting us. These students initiated their own fundraising effort by having two lunchtime “Walkathons” that were held on April 26th and April 27th, 2006. Our volunteers, runners, walkers, and wheelchair participants helped us raise $15,000 to benefit the Testaverde Fund for Spinal Cord Injury.

Some of the money raised from this year’s event was used to purchase a voice-activated laptop computer, an airflow mattress, and a power wheelchair to assist a local Long Island woman who was injured in a car accident in 2004, and is a high level quadriplegic. Additional money was donated to local research efforts in helping to find a cure for SCI.

A special thank you to all of our sponsors, without your support this event would not have been possible. Also a special thank you to Michelle, the young woman who sang the National Anthem prior to be start of the race.

Thank you for your continued efforts in helping us get one step closer to finding a cure for Spinal Cord Injury. We look forward to seeing you again at next year’s race.
