Joe Testaverde was one of several special award recipients at NYS Disabilities Awareness Day at the state capital in Albany on May 23,. The event, sponsored by the NY State Senate, recognized the special achievements of disabled constituents from each district. Joe was nominated by Senator Charles Fuschillo, who presented the NYS Senate Achievement Award to Joe for his accomplishments in overcoming many of the obstacles presented by his spinal cord injury. In particular, Joe’s work in visiting schools to educate kids about SCI, and his Wheels to Water program for disabled surfers were noted. Attending the event with Joe were his parents - Kathy and Anthony Testaverde, along with executive committee members Joe Petrella, Phil Doerbecker and Ron Quartararo.
Governor Pataki issued a proclamation naming May 23, 2006 as Senate Disabilities Day in New York State. Senator Joseph Bruno, majority leader stated “ The people honored here represent countless individuals who have broken barriers and enriched the quality of life in the Empire State and beyond. Their achievements should be a source of pride and inspiration to us all.”
Following the event, Senator Dean Skellos joined Senator Fuschillo for a photo session with Joe, his parents, and the Testaverde Fund officers.
